Avoidant Personality Disorder

Individuals with an avoidant personality disorder (also known as an inferiority complex) are characterised by an excessive fear of rejection and failure. They consider themselves to be socially inadequate and therefore actively avoid social interaction for fear of humiliation and ridicule.

Signs of an avoidant personality disorder are usually first noticed during early adulthood. Increased likelihood of developing the disorder has been associated with emotional neglect during childhood, peer group rejection, and bullying.
