Introduction / full article
Factitious Disorder
Factitious disorder
This is a disorder whereby a person acts as if they have an illness by purposefully producing, faking or exaggerating symptoms. People with Factitious Disorder make themselves believe that they are seriously ill though in reality they are not and may do things to themselves to make their so-called illness more believable. There are two types of Factitious Disorder- Imposed on Self and Imposed on Another (often a child). The former means that the person inflicts himself with symptoms of illness to get sympathy from other people among other reasons, while if a person has the latter, s/he will tell others that the person in her/his care has a disease that needs serious medical attention.
